The efffect of a childbirth psychoeducation program on postnatal depression

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of an antenatal childbirth psychoeducation program, which focused on teaching cognitive restructuring skills and problem solving strategies, on postnatal depression. Cognitive-behavioral strategies focus on challenging and changing dysfunctional cognitions and maladaptive behaviors that are believed to play a role in minimizing the risk of depression. This study used a mixed method design. The findings showed that women receiving the program had significant improvement in depressive symptoms compared to the control group during pregnancy and at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum. Women perceived the program to be helpful in fostering the development of cognitive-behavioral skills, enhancing their confidence in taking up the maternal role, and improving their emotional control in the perinatal period. The findings provide empirical support for the feasibility of the childbirth psychoeducation program for promoting perinatal health and minimizing the risk of postnatal depression.
